Dr. Lynette Charity is a distinguished Board-Certified Anesthesiologist with over 35 years of experience in the medical field. A native of the segregated South, she overcame numerous obstacles to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. Dr. Charity graduated with honors from Chatham College for Women and earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. She has practiced nationally, internationally, and as a U.S. Army doctor, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel.

In addition to her medical career, Dr. Charity is a keynote speaker, humorist, and author. She has competed in the semi-finals of the World Championship of Public Speaking and has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Cornerstone Award in Medicine and Volunteer of the Year from Chatham College for Women. Dr. Charity’s unique blend of medical expertise and engaging storytelling makes her a captivating figure in both the medical and literary worlds.

Nine-year-old Lynette Charity witnessed a traumatic event that fueled her determination to escape her impoverished life in the 1960s South. Inspired by the television show Ben Casey, she set her sights on becoming a doctor, a seemingly impossible dream for a Black girl at that time. Facing segregation and numerous obstacles, Lynette persevered through hard work and unwavering dedication, ultimately achieving her goal and becoming one of only seven Black women in her medical school class. Escape Plan is a raw, inspiring memoir about overcoming adversity and achieving the seemingly impossible.

Dr. Lynette Charity’s book, Escape Plan: Dreaming My Way Out of the Projects, is an exceptionally moving and inspiring account of her life. Known professionally before reading the book, the reviewer was unprepared for the depth of emotion and honesty in Dr. Charity’s storytelling. Her journey from a challenging childhood in the projects to becoming a successful physician is extraordinary. The book introduces readers to various influential figures in her life, some of whom were sources of pain, while others were guiding angels. Dr. Charity’s resilience and determination are highlighted as she rises above her circumstances. The beautifully written book reminds readers that it is possible to break free from poverty and trauma, emphasizing that one’s actions define their life. I saw Lynette Charity do stand up and ordered the book when I got home. I was totally unprepared for the not just the lack of love, but the opposite of love that she grew up with. I guess I was already a fan when I started, but she pulls you in with the unvarnished accounts of her childhood– you root for this smart, self-possessed, and justifiably angry kid to transcend her circumstances, and make her incredibly unlikely plans a reality. You know from the outset the book will have a happy ending, but there’s no magic wand, no overnight success. There are setbacks and there are helpers, and Lynette will never escape the trauma of her childhood. However, she has broken the cycle. I hope she writes another one– I know from her show that her professional/personal life since has been equally (but differently) inspiring.

My friend wrote this. I had no idea what her life was when she was young. Knowing Dr. Lynette Charity professionally, I had some insights into her life, but reading Escape Plan: Dreaming My Way Out of the Projects revealed depths of her journey I never imagined. Her resilience and determination to become a successful physician despite her challenging upbringing are truly extraordinary. This beautifully written book deepened my admiration and respect for her, and I eagerly anticipate her next work.
